Birds of the Rift Valley and Southern Highlands
This birding concept crosses several habitats: the escarpment around Ankober, the dry country of Awash, Rift Valley lakes and the high ground of Bale. Negele and Yabelo extend the interest farther south. The contrast between habitats is the reason to consider the whole journey, rather than treating it as a list of promised sightings.
Places and route components
- Addis Ababa and Ankober
- Awash National Park
- Langano and Wondo Genet
- Bale Mountains
- Negele and Yabelo
- Southern lakes: Awassa or Arba Minch, Lake Chamo and Nech Sar (base to confirm)
- Return to Addis Ababa
Schedule details still to resolve
The southern lake stage is not settled: plans for it mention both Awassa and the Arba Minch area, including Lake Chamo and Nech Sar. Ask the operator which base is used, where you stay overnight and how the transfer between the two areas works.
Developing this journey
Choose priority habitats and the amount of time you want to spend observing at each site. Ask for a birding guide, proposed observation areas and a clear southern transfer plan. Species lists can help preparation, but sightings depend on conditions and should not become itinerary guarantees.
