Overview

This outline starts and finishes in Addis Ababa over 11 days. Overnight locations, daily travel times and any walking demands are not yet confirmed; the day-by-day itinerary below shows the proposed sequence.

Day-by-day itinerary

A proposed sequence for discussion. Daily access, services and travel arrangements need confirmation.

Day 1

Arrival in the capital

The opening day introduces Addis Ababa before the eastern journey begins. Choose museum, market or neighbourhood visits to suit your arrival time and interests.

Day 2

Towards Hawzien

The sequence connects Addis Ababa with Mekele and continues to Hawzien. Historical stops in Tigray are part of the day, but individual sites should be selected against current access and visitor suitability.

Day 3

A day in Tigray

Remain around Hawzien for a separate day of historical exploration. Keeping this day local allows time for site choices instead of assuming that every rock church has the same access requirements.

Day 4

Dallol and Lake Asale

Descend from Hawzien towards Ahmed Ela and explore the Dallol and Lake Asale landscapes. The day's route and viewing areas depend on current access and local conditions.

Day 5

Towards Erta Ale

Continue from Ahmed Ela to Dodom for the Erta Ale approach. An evening ascent is contemplated here, subject to a current assessment of volcanic conditions and access.

Day 6

Lake Afrera and Semera

Return from Erta Ale towards Dodom, then continue by Lake Afrera to Semera. The salt-lake landscape marks the transition out of the volcanic section.

Day 7

Into Awash

Awash National Park follows Semera in the route sequence. Treat this as a travel-and-arrival day, with any park activities fitted around the arrangements actually confirmed rather than assumed from the map.

Semera → Awash National Park

Awash National Park.

Day 8

Awash exploration

Spend a full day in the Awash area. Choose the park visits with local guidance, taking account of current access and your wildlife or landscape interests.

Awash National Park

Awash National Park.

Day 9

Across to Harar

The next stage leaves Awash for Harar. The change from national-park landscape to a historic urban destination is central to this itinerary; no additional intermediate attraction is specified.

Awash National Park → Harar

Day 10

Harar's streets

The itinerary gives Harar its own city day. It mentions an evening hyena-feeding visit, which must remain optional pending a responsible visitor-experience review rather than being presented as a guaranteed encounter.

Day 11

Dire Dawa and Addis Ababa

Return through Awaday and Dire Dawa, with market and railway-station interests along the way, before ending in Addis Ababa. Fit any onward departure around the connections confirmed for your dates.
