Overview

This outline starts in Addis Ababa and finishes in Lake Afrera over 11 days. Overnight locations, daily travel times and any walking demands are not yet confirmed; the day-by-day itinerary below shows the proposed sequence.

Day-by-day itinerary

A proposed sequence for discussion. Daily access, services and travel arrangements need confirmation.

Day 1

Axum via Addis Ababa

Begin in Addis Ababa and continue to Axum for the stelae and religious heritage. Confirm the air connection so there is realistic time for the city visit.

Day 2

Towards Chehat

Begin the community walking section near Chehat with an approach to the plateau setting. Local hosts and guides should agree the visit and overnight arrangements.

Day 3

Chehat to Enaf

Continue through the Tigray landscape towards Enaf. The route crosses between valley and higher ground, making the walking gradient and current path conditions key subjects for an operator review.

Chehat → Enaf

Day 4

Down to Seheta

The next stage descends towards the farmland around Seheta. This is a separate valley day in the sequence, with local visits only where hosts agree and an appropriate route is confirmed.

Enaf → Seheta

Day 5

Towards Gohgot

Leave Seheta for Gohgot, with Gohgot Eyesus church named along the way. Church access and photography permissions should be agreed without assuming that a religious site is open for every visitor.

Seheta → Gohgot → Gohgot Eyesus

Day 6

Back towards Erar

Climb towards Erar on the escarpment, gaining higher ground after the valley walk. Set a suitable pace with local guidance on the day's trail conditions.

Gohgot → Erar

Day 7

Shimbrety and the rock tunnel

Continue towards Shimbrety through the rock-tunnel area associated with Maryam Buzuhan. The tunnel is a factual route feature, not proof that the path is presently accessible or appropriate for every walker.

Erar → Maryam Buzuhan → Shimbrety

Day 8

Gheralta transition

Reach Idega Arbi at the end of the walking sequence, then continue to Gheralta. Select rock-church visits according to current access and the level of climbing appropriate for the group.

Day 9

Erta Ale approach

Leave the community trails for the Danakil, with Erta Ale as the next objective. Confirm volcanic conditions and permitted access before arranging this stage.

Day 10

Towards Hamed Ela

After the volcanic section, the route returns through Dodom and continues towards Hamed Ela across the salt-working landscape. Work activity and caravan sightings are not scheduled visitor performances.

Day 11

Dallol and the salt lakes

The final day brings together Dallol, Lake Karum and Lake Afrera. Confirm access and the onward exit as part of the expedition plan; lake visits do not include an assumed bathing activity.
