Overview

For a longer or differently paced visit, Asheton Maryam and Naakuto Laab offer further monastery research, Ben Abeba adds a restaurant and architectural interest, and community trekking in Wollo introduces a separate walking extension. These are optional ideas for a revised journey, not stops added automatically to the five-day outline. Decide which interest deserves more time before discussing changes to the schedule.

Day-by-day itinerary

A proposed sequence for discussion. Daily access, services and travel arrangements need confirmation.

Day 1

Northwestern church group

The first Lalibela day focuses on the northwestern church group. Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel and Bet Danaghel are named interests, with current access and religious etiquette to confirm.

Day 2

Churches towards Hudad

The southeastern group and Bet Giyorgis precede the highland approach towards Hudad. Walking arrangements should be planned separately from church visiting so neither part is rushed or assumed suitable for everyone.

Day 3

Abuna Yosef option

A demanding Abuna Yosef excursion is proposed for this day. Assess altitude, walking experience and conditions individually; the summit remains optional.

Day 4

Yimrehane Kristos

Give Yimrehane Kristos and its highland approach a day of their own. Agree the walking start, permitted access and return arrangements before setting out.
