Overview

This outline starts and finishes in Addis Ababa over 9 days. Overnight locations, daily travel times and any walking demands are not yet confirmed; the day-by-day itinerary below shows the proposed sequence.

Day-by-day itinerary

A proposed sequence for discussion. Daily access, services and travel arrangements need confirmation.

Day 1

Capital introduction

Begin with Addis Ababa's neighbourhood, market and museum interests. The arrival programme remains flexible so that the later heritage stages are not preceded by an unrealistic sightseeing promise.

Day 2

Bahir Dar and Lake Tana

Reach Bahir Dar for a Lake Tana excursion. Choose the monastery visits and exact stops with current permission and boat arrangements.

Day 3

Awramba towards Gondar

Consider a visit to Awramba on the way to Gondar, then explore the city's church and Royal Enclosure interests. Confirm the community's invitation before including the Awramba stop.

Day 4

First Lalibela church group

Continue from Gondar to Lalibela and begin the first church cluster. Confirm the travel connection so the arrival programme leaves realistic time for the visit.

Day 5

Lalibela highland choices

The second church cluster precedes an optional Yemrehane Kristos visit or Asheton Maryam hike. These are alternatives requiring a choice, not two additional excursions promised together.

Day 6

Axum

Continue to Axum for its stelae, archaeological remains and religious landscape. Listen to the traditions associated with the city while distinguishing them from established historical evidence.

Day 7

Dire Dawa towards Harar

The eastern extension connects through Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa to Harar. Markets and railway interests belong to the approach, while actual flight availability and transfer feasibility remain unconfirmed.

Day 8

Harar city day

Spend the day in Harar's old city and local institutions. Agree access to religious and private places; any animal-feeding outing would need separate consideration.
