Overview

Bale merits closer planning because Harenna Forest and the Sanetti Plateau are distinct environments: forest interests differ from the open highland habitat associated with Ethiopian wolves. The current itinerary gives Bale a general park day without specifying both areas. Treat these as alternatives to assess with a guide; visiting both, or adding more observation time, may require a revised daily route or an additional stay.

Day-by-day itinerary

A proposed sequence for discussion. Daily access, services and travel arrangements need confirmation.

Day 1

Arrival in Addis Ababa

Begin in Addis Ababa with a manageable city introduction. Choose museum or neighbourhood interests around arrival and time to rest.

Day 2

Bahir Dar and the falls

Reach Bahir Dar and visit the Blue Nile Falls area. The river landscape and the city's lakeside setting introduce the northern journey.

Day 3

Lake Tana monasteries

A full lake day reaches Zege and its monastery interests. Individual church visits, boat operation and permissions must be confirmed rather than treating every island as interchangeable or automatically accessible.

Day 4

Towards the Simiens

Continue into the Simien landscape for an arrival and orientation day. Confirm the accommodation separately and use the available time to settle into the mountain setting.

Day 5

Chenek viewpoints

The mountain day extends towards Chenek and its viewpoints. Route access and walking scope require current assessment, with wildlife observation presented as a possibility rather than a certainty.

Day 6

Gondar's historical sites

Leave the mountains for Gondar and its Royal Enclosure and church heritage. A helicopter transfer is proposed for this stage, subject to aircraft availability and landing permission.

Day 7

Lalibela's first church group

Continue to Lalibela and begin with the first church group. Historical interpretation should come from current, qualified guidance and respect the sites' religious role.

Day 8

Further Lalibela exploration

The second church group and Bet Giyorgis receive separate time. Any additional monastery excursion depends on access and the visitor's walking preferences rather than automatic inclusion.

Day 9

Axum heritage

Complete the northern section with Axum's stelae, archaeological remains and religious landscape. Explore the city's visible history and the traditions that continue to give it meaning.

Day 10

South to Arba Minch

The route changes regions through Addis Ababa to Arba Minch. This connection requires confirmed flight arrangements; a schematic sequence does not establish same-day service availability.

Day 11

Konso and Jinka

Travel through Konso, Weito and Key Afer to Jinka, where the museum introduces South Omo history. Markets and community visits require date checks and local agreement.

Day 12

Mursi interests towards Turmi

Combine a proposed Mursi visit with the journey through Dimeka towards Turmi. Agree all visits and photography with the communities involved.

Day 13

Kolcho and Hamar communities

The day links Kolcho's Karo interests with Hamar communities around Turmi. Arrange visits as distinct hosted encounters, with local people deciding the appropriate scope and photography permissions.

Day 14

Back through Konso

The journey turns north through Konso to Arba Minch. The Konso landscape receives its own attention rather than being reduced to an anonymous transfer stop.

Day 15

Dorze to Hawassa

Continue towards Hawassa, with Dorze interests around Chencha. Local buildings and weaving provide the cultural themes, with any visit or demonstration agreed with the hosts.

Day 16

Hawassa into Bale

The fish-market area precedes the drive into Bale. The day marks a change from Rift Valley lakes to highland habitats, with any arrival walk adjusted to the confirmed journey.

Day 17

Bale park day

Give Bale's highland environments a full park day. Choose the route with local advice to reflect conditions and the group's natural-history interests.

Day 18

Down to Langano

Descend to Lake Langano for a lakeside stage. Any water-based recreation needs a separate decision informed by current local guidance and individual suitability.

Day 19
