Ethiopia in September
September brings a meeting of landscape and celebration in much of Ethiopia’s highlands. Green scenery, the transition from the main rains and important calendar events can shape a journey in different ways.
Give the celebrations separate days
A September journey may include Enkutatash near the start of the Ethiopian year and Meskel later in the month. In Addis Ababa, Meskel Square is closely associated with the latter. Choose whether your main interest is a public gathering, a locally hosted visit or landscapes after rain: each needs different time and arrangements.
A season of transition
The highland landscape often remains green after the wetter months, with flowers contributing to the seasonal colour. Rain can still influence walking, road journeys and visibility, so an outdoor itinerary needs flexibility. Consider whether you want extended mountain days or a more varied programme combining towns, heritage visits and shorter walks.
Two celebrations with different meanings
Enkutatash marks Ethiopian New Year, while Meskel commemorates the Finding of the True Cross. They are separate celebrations. If either is central to your visit, confirm the year’s dates and the local programme before arranging accommodation. Join respectfully, follow hosts’ guidance and leave space for worship rather than treating ceremonies as timed performances.
