The Highlands Around Lalibela

Lalibela’s surroundings extend the visit beyond the town’s central church groups. Highland monasteries, walking routes and broad views offer different ways to understand the landscape around the heritage sites.

Go farther only when walking is the purpose

Hudad and the Abuna Yoseph highlands introduce escarpment stays and longer walks beyond the central church circuit. A community trek through Wollo is another substantial chapter, with hosts and overnight places to arrange. Keep these possibilities separate from a brief monastery excursion so that the itinerary reflects the time and effort each needs.

Choose a distinct highland visit

Yemrehana Krestos, Asheton Maryam and Na’akuto La’ab have different settings and approaches. Ask what makes each proposed visit worthwhile and how it will fit with your time in the town. A named monastery is more useful than a vague promise of a mountain excursion, especially when you want to understand the walking involved.

Make time for the approach

A highland walk can be part of the experience rather than simply the means of reaching a building. Discuss terrain, elevation changes, guiding and the pace of the day. Community trekking adds further questions about hosts, overnight arrangements and local participation. Avoid treating all of these activities as an easy afternoon extension; the actual route should determine the schedule.
