Ethiopia in October

October offers a useful starting point for thinking about Ethiopia after the main highland rains. The experience still depends on the region: a mountain walk, a church visit and an Afar journey have different needs.

Afar and the south need their own plan

Dallol, Erta Ale and the Danakil salt lakes form a separate lowland extension. Cooler conditions than the hottest months do not make them a highland-style excursion. For the Omo Valley, begin with the communities and road stages you hope to visit, then establish whether those particular approaches suit your dates.

Highland scenery after the rains

The northern highlands can retain green slopes and seasonal flowers as the wetter period gives way to drier conditions. That makes landscape part of the journey rather than a background to the monuments. In Lalibela or the Simien Mountains, leave room for unhurried views alongside the principal visits. A seasonal pattern does not predict the weather on a particular walking day.

Build the month around a region

Choose the route before treating October as a universal recommendation. Ask about the condition of the specific trails and roads you intend to use, and whether the proposed overnight places are operating. A northern circuit, Bale visit and Danakil extension should be assessed separately.

  • Identify the places that matter most to you.
  • Discuss recent local conditions before confirming walking days.
  • Allow time between remote sections and onward transport.
